About Us

We’re 3rd generation Alaskans raising our kids in Alaska’s interior.

Our latest transition is launching the three children off to “away school,” the local public school for the younger two and one of the charter schools for our freshly minted jr. higher.

Natasha expressed an interested in away school back in February, but I felt it was too near the end of the year to transition at that point. Since her next year was going to be jr. high, I told her we could apply to the smaller schools that teach through 8th grade, but I wasn’t willing to let her attend one of the big box schools for her first year away from home.

There weren’t any slots open for 7th-graders at the time, but we prayed about it, discussing the reality that God can do what he wants, and this way getting in would be a very clear indicator that this was the right place to be.

She was offered both schools we applied to, we picked our favorite (thankfully the same one) and now feel we can rest easy that she is where she should be.

The younger children enjoy riding the bus, and we all are still adjusting to the outside demands and schedules, but the kids like their teachers and that’s a solid start.

[Pre-2015 description:]

In January of 2011 we moved to a rocky six acres on the outskirts of our community. We now live in a 1-bedroom house with under 1000 square feet as we save a few years to build our “forever” home.

The Foci page explains what goes on in our home and on this blog. We’ve covered a lot of territory since the blog’s birth in 2006, and the Archives (drop-down menu at the bottom of the sidebar) will let you tour that.

“Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live;
it is asking others to live as one wishes to live.

And unselfishness is letting other people’s lives alone,
not interfering with them.
Selfishness always aims at uniformity of type.
Unselfishness recognizes infinite variety of type
as a delightful thing,
accepts it, acquiesces in it, enjoys it.”
